Knowing when to show your work is the hardest step of all.

I’m getting to the point of editing where I just don’t feel like I can do much more to benefit my work. My eyes have looked at the same words so many times that I get sick just thinking about having to read over them again. (I’m not sure if that’s the appropriate response to have.)

It’s at this point that I feel like I should seek out someone else to look at my work, but that is a HUGE step. Right now, my novel is still something that is almost entirely mine. The idea of having someone else look at it is downright terrifying. So many questions run through my head.

Is it long enough?

Is it too long?

Why did my character decide to make that decision in chapter 4?

Why does my character’s name sound so dumb when said out loud?

It’s at this point that I feel like having someone read my work is probably the least helpful thing I could do for it. Especially someone who is probably expecting more from my work than it can offer right now.

I need a soft editor. Not someone who will tell me everything is sunshine and rainbows. I’m gullible, but not that gullible. No, I need someone who would understand that it’s not perfect, but I need some input. I have people that I could ask, but I also feel like they might not want to hurt my feelings because they are also my friends.

I think it’s similar to not wanting a friend to operate on you. You want them to do their job, not worry that saving your life is going to leave a terrible scar that won’t let you wear a two-piece swimsuit anymore. That was probably a little overboard, but you get my drift.

If anyone has any tips, I’d love a pointer! If not, I keep moving forward with my own editing and I’ll see you on Friday!
